The automaker Stellantis has filed eight new lawsuits against the United Auto Workers union, as well as 23 lawsuits against local unions. Furthermore, to add to the issues between the company and the union, Stellantis also rejected the proposal made by UAW that would have reinstated the Jobs Bank concept. Stellantis faults this program claiming it is why they went bankrupt in 2009. Originally, the company filed against United Auto Workers in just one legal action earlier in October. Just one day later, they added eight more cases against the union and the 23 others against local unions. Due to the proposal denial and the lawsuits, United Auto Workers and Stellantis gathered to discuss how to continue their working relationship.
This is not the first issue the two agencies have had in the past few months,
Back in August, the union threatened to file a formal grievance against Stellantis who was supposed to be reopening their Belvidere plant but had made no effort to progress the reopening. The union outspokenly shared that Stellantis was being “unreceptive” to attempts to discuss the reopening of the plant. However, Stellantis has been firing back claiming that they have legal wiggle room to be in the spot they are currently in with regard to the reopening. Additionally, Stellantis is claiming that it is outside of the legal right of the United Auto Workers to call for a strike.
Essentially, the past several months has seen a lot of back and forth between Stellantis and the United Auto Workers.
Both sides place blame on the other entity saying they have not been communicative, leading us now to the point of the many lawsuits. Stellantis holds to the notion that they are protecting their employees with their actions while the union continues to explain that they are also similarly merely trying to provide employee protection. From here, it is unclear how the relationship between the automaker and the union will continue, as they have lacked unity for a long time now. Some suggest that Stellantis will eventually drop the cases against the United Auto Workers and other small unions, but for now it does seem that they are distancing themselves from unions quite drastically.
