Mazda has made it official! They’re planning to bring the MX-30 to the USA. As news continue to develop, one thing’s for sure… Or rather two. The MX-30 will be available in two forms: a battery-powered EV or a plug-in hybrid, equipped with a rotary gasoline. This truly is unexpected news, and yet, Mazda is still keeping cards close to their chest, with no actual arrival date announced in the U.S. market.
Mazda Competes In The EV Race
The MX-30 is displayed as a crossover with five seats and rear half-doors that may remind you of the company’s nearest rotary-powered sports car. That being the RX-8. The EV version has 144-horsepower electric motor capability enhancing the front wheels and offering small 35.5 kilowatt battery packs. This allows for a short 124-mile driving range on the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure, otherwise more commonly known as the WLTP cycle. Mazda justifies their emissions pretty confidently. This is given the small battery pack. So there’s a likelihood that they’ll make slight modifications if the idea is to fit a larger battery pack in the U.S. version.
The specs for the Plug-In Hybrid are murky at best. Most likely, it’ll be powered by the electric motor. This is nothing new. BMW and Chevrolet have both done this before with the i3 and Volt models, respectively.
As has been the case before, the gas engine is likely to serve as a range-extender. This is with the purpose of charging the battery pack. But with the MX-30, the added hurdle is that the rotary design is said to be rather unconventional.
So far, Mazda is keeping hush about what time of existence that the MX-30 will arrive on American soil. But surely, they’ll say something in anticipation for dealerships in 2022 or even 2023’s model year.
