DETROIT, MICHIGAN — The advocacy organization New American Economy (NAE) has recently released a study that said that Detroit is one of the most welcoming cities in America for immigrants. Immigrants love our lovely Motor City for a lot of reasons, chief among them being its quality of life metrics.
NAE measured local policies and socioeconomic outcomes across the 100 largest cities in the United States. Detroit earned a 3.78 out of 5.00 overall score. It scored high in the following categories: quality of life, economic empowerment, and job opportunities. However, the city only earned 2.00 out of 5.00 in civic participation for immigrants. Therefore, despite the good overall scores, there are still areas in which Detroit can improve as a city going forward. There’s still something to shoot for for Motor City politicians!
Detroit Hosts Welcome Week for Immigrants
The new study ranking coincided nearly perfectly with the announcement of Detroit’s inaugural Welcoming Week. This event features a series of celebrations from Sept. 17-21 in honor of Detroit’s diverse immigrant communities. Among the communities are the Latino, Arab, Caribbean, African, Chinese, and Bangladeshi communities. All of these communities are a big part of what makes Detroit one of the best U.S. cities for immigrants.
Detroit City Council member Raquel Castaneda-Lopez, one of the event’s organizers, said that Detroit has long been shaped by its diverse immigrant communities. The new and life-long immigrants that make almost the majority of the population continue working in diverse fields and supporting the economy of the city.
She also mentioned that these small efforts of supporting the immigrants can positively affect the issue of immigrants on a federal level. Obviously, immigration is always a hot-button issue in the U.S., especially in the federal government. Detroit is leading the charge to help make people from all over the world feel welcome in the U.S.
